ALIMA calls for greater funding to address mental health crises in areas of conflict in Africa
DAKAR, Oct. 9, 2023 – Worldwide, almost 280 million people–or 3.8% of the global population–suffer from depressive disorders, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). These disorders represent only a fraction of all mental health issues. The scale of the problem calls for greater effort and commitment on a global level.

Clarisse Allaira Bakada has been running awareness campaigns at the Intensive Therapeutic Feeding Center (ITFC) within the Chad-China Friendship Hospital in N’Djaména, Chad, since 2013. A midwife by profession, a key part of her job is to lead information sessions every morning for mothers of children hospitalised with severe acute malnutrition, focusing on topics such as proper nutrition.
In Chad, more than 360,000 children under the age of 5 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition this year.* Each year, the country faces a peak of malnutrition between July and October. The city of N’Djaména is particularly affected. ALIMA and its local partner, Alerte Santé, intervene and take care of thousands of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Lake Chad basin populations in distress
Friday, 24 February 2017. A humanitarian crisis is affecting nearly 10 million people in parts of Niger, Chad and Cameroon also Nigeria in the Lake Chad basin. Since 2014, the region has become a theater for a series of suicide bombings and violent clashes between military forces and Boko Haram. The global violence is affecting civilians who are forced to flee. In the areas that have been devastated by conflict, food insecurity and poverty, ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action) provides medical and nutritional care to the most vulnerable populations.
