Like ALIMA, any organisation needs a legal basis to collect and use personal data covered by data protection legislation. The General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 provides for six modes of processing personal data, with additional modes for sensitive personal data. Three of these processing methods apply to the types of processing used by ALIMA :

- The individual’s consent (e.g. to send you direct marketing communications by e-mail)
- The need to comply with a legal obligation (e.g. to process a tax deduction return)
- Our legitimate interests (see below for more details)
Provided that the use of the data is fair and does not infringe the rights of the data subject, personal data may be lawfully collected and used by ALIMA if it serves the legitimate interests of the organisation. Our legitimate interests are listed below :
- Charity governance (e.g. the achievement of our charitable objectives, financial reporting and other regulatory compliance purposes)
- Administrative and operational management (e.g. to provide information and services)
