Mpox Outbreak in the DRC: Dr. Abdoul Karim Sangaré Warns of a Catastrophic Situation

Speaking on the program Priorité Santé on RFI, Dr. Abdoul Karim Sangaré, ALIMA’s Medical Coordinator in Goma, raised the alarm over the surge of the Mpox outbreak in the DRC.

“We are seeing a drastic increase in Mpox cases, multiplied by seven in just one year,” said Dr. Abdoul Karim Sangaré. More than 3,300 deaths have been recorded in six months—nearly double the toll from 2024.

Large population movements, driven by the security crisis in the country’s east, are fueling the spread of the virus and the emergence of new hotspots. Supplying health facilities with medicine remains a major challenge. “The epidemic is worsening while funding is declining: the situation is becoming catastrophic,” he warned.
