Mbera: understanding a refugee crisis that has lasted for 14 years

In Mauritania, the Mbera camp was designed to host 70,000 people. Today, it shelters around 120,000. Since 2012, families fleeing violence in Mali have sought refuge there, in a region where resources, healthcare services, water, and food are under pressure.

Beyond the camp, tens of thousands of refugees also live in nearby villages, where medical and nutritional needs are significant.

Present in the region since 2019, ALIMA supports health facilities, treats malnutrition, and supports vaccination campaigns.
