Al Jazeera visits ALIMA’s Ebola centre in Rwampara

On 2 July 2026, Al Jazeera published a report from Ituri, the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in the DRC. In Rwampara, Dr Gabriel Tshiwisa shows the treatment centre run by ALIMA and stresses the importance of working with communities.

Al Jazeera followed the Ebola response in Ituri, first in Bunia, then in Rwampara. In this town of cattle farmers, an hour’s drive from Bunia, the local health centre also serves as an Ebola treatment centre run by ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action).

Dr Gabriel Tshiwisa shows the team around. He explains that at least one person dies from Ebola every day in the area. According to the report, fear, mistrust and rumours are holding back the response: some residents still doubt the disease exists. Working with the community has become as much of a priority as patient care.

The report ends on a note of hope: more and more patients are surviving Ebola. Al Jazeera meets a survivor treated at the Rwampara centre.
