ALIMA’s CUBE against Ebola, seen by the BBC and Anadolu

On 1 June 2026 the BBC, then on 19 September the Anadolu Agency, featured the CUBE, the biosecure emergency care unit designed by ALIMA. Dr Papys Lame, ALIMA’s Ebola response coordinator, explains its value to the BBC.

ALIMA’s CUBE against Ebola has caught the attention of two international media outlets. This biosecure emergency care unit for epidemics is being used in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) against the Bundibugyo virus.

BBC, 1 June 2026: caring for patients without exposure

In an article on the work of health workers in the DRC, the BBC presents the CUBE as a key tool in the response. Dr Papys Lame, ALIMA’s Ebola response coordinator, says the device ensures the necessary standard of care, a positive patient experience and the protection of health workers. The BBC also notes that there are still too few CUBEs compared with the number of suspected cases.

“You don’t need to have full PPE to be in contact with patients, so it’s a very, very important device in this kind of outbreak.” (Dr Papys Lame, Ebola Response Coordinator, ALIMA)

Anadolu, 19 September 2026: an innovation born from experience

he Anadolu Agency explains that ALIMA developed the CUBE from lessons learned during the 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa. Its transparent walls and built-in gloves let health workers care for patients from outside, while keeping patients in contact with their families. According to ALIMA, quoted by Anadolu, the CUBE can be set up in under 90 minutes and can cut costs by up to 75% compared with conventional facilities. More than 500 patients with haemorrhagic fevers have been treated in CUBEs in the DRC, Guinea and Nigeria since 2018.

From the BBC to Anadolu, the same picture emerges: the CUBE makes it possible to provide care close to outbreak hotspots, protecting both patients and health workers.
