Humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the humanitarian situation is marked by persistent armed conflicts, massive population displacement, and a health crisis exacerbated by recurrent epidemics. People face limited access to healthcare, food insecurity, and high rates of malnutrition, particularly affecting women and children.

👩⚕️ Women’s health
In North Kivu and Ituri, ALIMA is supporting healthcare facilities to provide medical follow-up to pregnant women and young mothers, by ensuring:
- Free pre- and postnatal consultations
- Medical support for childbirth
- Care for women victims of sexual and gender-based violence
📊 In 2024, ALIMA conducted 16,631 prenatal consultations and assisted 11,040 births.
🥣 Malnutrition
In North Kivu and Ituri, ALIMA is working to fight malnutrition by:
- Ensuring early detection through the MUAC-Mothers approach
- Treating malnourished children for free
- Training local health workers on nutrition protocols
📊 In 2024, ALIMA treated 5,583 children suffering from moderate and severe acute malnutrition.
🦠 Epidemics and emerging diseases
ALIMA plays a key role in the fight against epidemics in the DRC, including:
- Response to measles, cholera, and Monkeypox
- Implementation of disease surveillance and early detection protocols
- Rapid setup of emergency treatment units and vaccination points
📊 In 2024, ALIMA vaccinated 6,321 people.
🔬 Research and innovation: tracking and treating emerging diseases
- SORMAS project: development of an epidemiological surveillance software
- Monkeypox research: studies on the transmission and management of the disease.
📊 In 2024, ALIMA trained 894 healthcare workers in new epidemic response strategies.
Highlight project in the Democratic Republic of Congo
🎯 Integrated emergency assistance for conflict victims in Ituri and rapid response in North Kivu
Since March 2024, ALIMA has been working in the health zones of Bambu, Fataki, Mangala, Nyiragongo, Karisimbi, and Goma, providing assistance in health, nutrition, protection, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and RRM (Rapid Response Mechanism), as well as management of Mpox cases.
📌 Why this project matters
- Ongoing health crisis: increased cases of malaria, AKI (Acute Kidney Injury), and diarrheal diseases, with a high infant mortality rate (88 deaths per 1,000 births).
- Epidemiological and nutritional emergencies: Mpox declared in North Kivu and widespread severe acute malnutrition in three health zones.
- Healthcare and protection gaps: insufficient psychosocial support and socio-economic reintegration for GBV survivors, and health centers not meeting SPHERE standards.
📌 Project goals
- Ensure access to curative and preventive care, including sexual and reproductive health (prenatal care, childbirth, CPoN), sexual violence management, and mental health support, free of charge for the entire population.
- Care for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).
- Improve waste management, access to water and sanitation facilities (latrines, showers) to meet the necessary standards.
This project enabled 121,966 curative consultations.
Testimony from the field: the impact of ALIMA's actions
I have been living in the Rusayo camp for displaced people for a month. My husband and I fled our home with our five children. We arrived here, but the conditions are extremely difficult. Thankfully, ALIMA has helped us: my son Thomas got vaccinated against measles and is receiving free care. I don't know what we would have done without this health center.
